Learn basic BSL

British Sign Language (BSL) is a visual language that uses gestures and facial expressions rather than words. It’s one of the UK’s original languages and it’s fun and easy for anyone to learn.

RNID Connect will introduce you to BSL, so you feel more confident when trying to converse with BSL users at home, work or in society.

What is included in your RNID Connect pack?

Each pack has been thoughtfully themed to introduce you to easy-to-learn BSL words, interesting facts and stats, and useful communication tips. You’ll also find activities, two family-friendly games, and the first pack will include a beautiful keepsake box for all your cards.

Become a deaf awareness ally

Communication helps to build meaningful connections with people in the world around you. It’s a powerful tool that can deepen friendships, develop ideas, and inspire action.

Wherever you live in the UK, whatever your hearing status, you do know people with hearing loss. They could be your family, your friends, your neighbours, your colleagues, or your customers. Don’t let these connections slip way – thanks to tips and insights into deaf culture, RNID Connect can help you to strengthen your communication skills and become a deaf awareness ally.

“I started learning BSL 10 years ago as a hearing person with no links to the Deaf community. I love how knowing BSL means barriers are broken down and I can communicate with so many more people, learn their culture and history.

BSL is a rich and beautiful language, and I am so proud to be able to use it. I will never stop advocating for BSL to be included in all areas of life, from politics to theatre, as it opens barriers to communication and creates instant connections with strangers.”

– Abi

How it works

When will I receive my first RNID Connect pack?

Each month you’ll receive an RNID Connect pack through the post. You will receive your first pack after you have made your first payment. Payments will be collected on the 1st or 15th day of every month. You should receive your first RNID Connect pack up to three weeks after your first payment.

Where does the money for RNID Connect go?

Your RNID Connect subscription costs £10 a month, which is a donation to RNID. All proceeds go towards RNID’s work to make a difference to the lives of more than 18 million people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus.

RNID provides life-changing support, campaigns for equality and funds pioneering research. This couldn’t happen without the generous support of people like you. Out of every £1 RNID receives, 88p is spent on helping people confronting deafness, tinnitus and hearing loss.

When will payments be taken from my account?

Depending on the payment date you have chosen, your donation will be collected on the 1st or 15th day of each month. We require 10 working days to set up your direct debit before the first payment. If you sign up within the 10 days of your chosen first payment, your donation may be collected the following month.

How long will I receive RNID Connect packs for?

After you sign up to RNID Connect you will receive 12 packs, one each month. After 12 months, you will stop receiving your packs, but your monthly donation will continue supporting people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus to live more inclusive lives.

What payment methods do you accept?

Currently we only accept payments via Direct Debit.

Can I sign up if I live abroad?

Unfortunately, we can only fulfil orders within the UK.

I already support RNID with a regular gift, can I get this too?

To receive RNID Connect you will need to sign up for an additional regular gift.

Can I gift a subscription to someone else?

Of course you can! When you sign up you will be able to enter the details of the person you wish to receive the RNID Connect packs. We may be biased, but we think this would make a wonderful gift. Just remember that once your subscription ends after 12 months, you’ll still be making a valuable donation to support the work of RNID.

What happens if I miss a payment?

If you miss a payment, we will take this to mean that you have cancelled your subscription and no longer want to receive RNID Connect. If you decide you’d like to reactive your direct debit, please get in touch with us by calling 0808 808 0123 or emailing contact@rnid.org.uk.
