Deaf actress fronts new Ellie Goulding music video

We’re thrilled that the new video for Alok, Ellie Goulding and Sigala’s song ‘All By Myself’ features a deaf actress, Pryscilla Monroy García, and follows the story of a deaf girl enjoying a night out with her friends.

The video shows the story of a young deaf woman having a good time, enjoying the music and embracing her life and her deaf identity.

What we did

Sony asked us to review the new video and to provide feedback on it. Three of our deaf staff members watched it and fed back positively about the storyline. They felt that it accurately represents what happens when deaf people go out – that they can enjoy the music but still miss out on conversations.

We asked Sony to caption the video so that deaf people and people with hearing loss could follow the lyrics, and suggested that they provide captions for the moments in the video where the sound is muffled (reflecting a deaf person’s experience) to make this clear to our audience. Unfortunately, this did not happen but a lyric video for the song can be found here

We provided a quote for Sony’s press release to launch the video, and asked if we could interview Pryscilla about her experiences. We are excited to share this interview very soon!

“We’re thrilled that the video for Alok, Ellie Goulding and Sigala’s new song ‘All By Myself’ features a deaf actress, Pryscilla Monroy García, and follows the story of a deaf girl enjoying a night out with her friends.

“Representation like this is so important to increase awareness of what it’s like to be deaf and the different experiences that deaf people and people with hearing loss have. We hope this video shows the richness of the Deaf community’s language and culture and helps to break down the barriers that deaf people and people with hearing loss face.”
